Antique
Western or Central Plains (Ute/ Sioux (Lakota) Antler Quirt from circa 1880.
Ex-John Molloy Gallery (NYC); ex-E. Helene Sage collection (Santa Fe, NM).
This quirt is
published
in E. Helene Sage's book:
Native American Horse Gear
(Schiffer Books, 2012), with two pictures on p. 107.
The antler shaft has five incised lines filled with ochre pigment.
Molloy labels the quirt 'Lakota', while Sage labels it 'Ute', but without a doubt it is an old piece from the Northern or Western Plains.
The antler shaft is circa 15" long. The rawhide lash is circa 27" long and is somewhat fragile from age.
The beaded buffalo hide wrist strap is a later replacement and is decorated with white and light blue beads, sinew and thread sewn, blue fabric and tinklers filled with red horsehair.
