Description

This extremely rare horse dance stick came out of an old Virginia estate collection.  By family tradition, the Native American items were collected prior to WWII by a now deceased family member who traveled to the American West.  This piece was displayed with a piece of Turtle Mountain Indian Pottery and I have extrapolated a possible Chippewa association.  I do think it is Northern Plains.  I just watched the Amazo Prime documentary HORSE TRIBE and saw similar dance sticks.   I also must note that there were items from several Southwestern tribes in the collection as well - Navajo, Hopi, Kewa, and San Ildefonso.  This dance stick is 16.5 inches long - with horse hair and leather - the leather base wrap has polychrome decoration.  I think it dates to the early 20th century.  Please study the photos - they are the main part of the description.
