SUPER RARE ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN SPOON OR LADLE - VERY OLD AND SINEW SEWN -
You are bidding on a super rare Native American spoon or small ladle. Artifacts like this one just do not come to the market very often, especially in this condition. The utensil was handcrafted from wood and sinew. The ladle portion appears to be carved and holes were drilled through to allow the handle to be attached with sinew. I must assume this item to be well over 140 years old, as I am sure that with Western Expansion the Native Peoples would have been able to acquire metal versions of this tool for preparing or eating their food. The utensil measures approximately 5 inches in length and 2 1/2 inches wide. The only reason this item has remained in existence is it was handed down through Pat Reads father and grandfather, all of whom were traders with the Indians in Lawrence, Kansas dating back to before the Civil War. Pat's father owned and operated the first Dry Goods Store in Lawrence, Kansas on Mass. Street and can be seen in illustrations after Quantrill's Raid. You are truly looking at a miracle item now up for auction on Ebay. Good luck finding another spoon with the attached handle this old in your lifetime. Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition and as part of my description. As stated above the vest appears to be sinew sewn. The beadwork seems to be 99% intact. The leather remains soft and malleable.
The entire length of vest is approximately 24 inches in length and 20 inches wide at the widest point. I guarantee you will not be disappointed, should you be the lucky winner. A copy of both the postcard containing Pat Read at his shop in Lawrence, Kansas during the 1950's will be included with the vest as well as the copy of the original photo of Button Thomas wearing this item. I don't know where on Ebay you will find an antique beaded item with this much provenance. I will carefully box this item to the winning bidder by Priority Mail for FREE.
